A Replacement for RED’s Scarlet?

(via Gizmodo) Okay, so the idea of shooting a feature film (or reasonably-lengthed short) with a still camera was really rubbing me the wrong way, but with the recent death of the RED Scarlet, what very cheap option does a guy like me have? Enter Redrock’s “Cinemizing” (that’s a brand new word there) kit for the Canon 5D Mark II DSLR, which, with a whole hell of a lot of attachments, turns your puny, yet affordable, astoundingly-good digital still camera into something that at least looks like a proper movie camera.

Details are a little sketchy at the moment, but, unlike the RED products, Redrock seems to be on the fast-track: it’s set to be announced today at the PhotoPlus event in New York, for possible release on November 1.

Sure, it’s not the world I imagined when RED originally announced the Scarlet back at the beginning of the year, but at least the camera’s already available and you’re not stuck with one lens. Not a dedicated solution but on that saves me a lot of trouble doing it myself with cardboard and masking tape I guess.

More details as they emerge …
