(via Boing-Boing) There seems to be something in the air. I mean, how long has it been since the last big absurd claim that fooled some of the top web news sites? At any rate, a lot of sites are reporting that the body of a “bigfoot” has been found by these guys in Georgia (the Georgia Bigfoot Trackers!) who are planning a press conference in Palo Alto this Friday (August 15). From what I understand, Loren Coleman at Crypomundo (whose work I respect and have been reading for years) even backed-up the story when it first broke, sometime last night. Update: now that I’m able to get through all the busy server traffic, Coleman’s actual word on the claim was: “This body has little to do with Bigfoot and everything to do with a Sasquatch costume that someone developed after watching too many gorilla movies.”
Now, while the presses are still hot, it’s already been severely debunked. Sour grapes or just complete and utter insanity? Look at the picture and you tell me. If I’ve ever seen a Halloween costume with chicken guts on top, that’s it.
So, why the massive embarrassment of a press conference?
Anyway, click on the little picture to make it bigger and examine it in detail.
Update 8-15-08: the official press conference was held earlier today, and was carried live on both Fox News and CNN! Little was revealed. The Georgia Bigfoot Trackers(!) showed a couple of photos and said they have the body and plan to have some scientists look at it at some point. A blow-by-blow can be found here.
Update 8-19-08: this just in: hoax. Fox News confirms that the Georgia Bigfoot Trackers(!) used a big rubber bigfoot costume to allegedly claim big bigfoot reward money.
