It’s strange that just last night I was watching “Total Recall” with some friends and I realized how much Arnold Schwarzenegger resembled Charlton Heston in features and acting style in some of the scenes, and started wondering what Ridley Scott’s proposed version of “I Am Legend” (to star Schwarzenegger) would have been like, especially as a pseudo-remake of “Omega Man”, which I still consider to be a brilliant movie, starring Charlton Heston in 1971.
Charlton Heston, despite his political views and embarrassing appearance in “Bowling for Columbine”, was legend, for most, in his run of biblical films in the 50’s, but for me, a handful of films in the 60’s and 70’s in particular: “Planet of the Apes” (and it’s immediate sequel), “Omega Man” and “Soylent Green”. He fairly epitomized the dark, dystopian future in cinema terms for a whole generation, where guns were the ony means left of resolving disputes.
Moriarty, over at Ain’t It Cool News, has a terrific, in-depth obituary for Heston that I urge you to check out (he’s got some later career details in there I didn’t even know about).
Although he did enjoy a very long and full career, his personality will be missed.
