Already predisposed to despise this remake — the most pointless remake in the pointless history of remakes — I imagine (judging from the trailer) this is how the high-level conversation went, browsing through a glossy, hardcover picture-book of classic films:
“Here’s one. Ooooh look.”
“That guy has black hair, I’m seeing Keanu Reeves.”
“What’s it called?”
…
“‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’.”
“Wha? ‘The Day After Tomorrow’?”
“No, ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’.”
“Oh, sorry, I had a bluetooth problem. Wow, ‘Day the Earth Stood Still’. That sounds like a good one. What’s it about?”
“Well, it says, an alien comes down to Earth to warn humans — ”
“That they’re destroying the environment? Like in ‘Day After Tomorrow’?”
“No, because — ”
“I’ve heard enough! It’s perfect! Imagine the CG spectacle when the world stands still!”
“Er, it says here that the Earth doesn’t stand still, the alien just makes all technology stop for an hour.”
“Huh? Well that must be wrong. I mean, it’s called ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still‘. We’ll make the picture that way!”
Bonus points for whoever can spot the Three Stooges quote in the above. Click up there somewhere for the trailer link if you wanna see what would actually happen if an alien landed on Earth: they’d put him on “The Moment of Truth” apparently (well, it is Fox after all).
