“Fanboys” Rebellion

(via AICN) Here’s a cause worth fighting for; I have been watching, out of the corner of my eye, for the last while, the goings-on surrounding the indie film, “Fanboys”. The film last screened (as a rough cut) in 2007 at Star Wars Celebration Europe where it was received enthusiastically by the - uh - well, fanboys. Anyway, enter The Weinstein Company, who have been delaying the film for quite some time …

The film, a comedy-drama in the tradition of “Stand By Me”, revolves around a group of friends in 1998, now grown-up, but still obsessed with “Star Wars” who hatch an insane scheme to break into Skywalker Ranch so one of them can see “Star Wars: Episode I” before he dies from cancer. Everything I’ve heard from people who’ve actually managed to see the film is good. They say it captures the true spirit of what it is (or used to be) to be a “Star Wars” fan.

Well, word has it The Weinstein Company has recut the film to eliminate the cancer sub-plot … ?!?!?! … er, I thought that was the plot … and have turned it into a balls-out comedy in the tradition of, well, I guess something that’s funny without any kind of point or character development.

Anyway, now, a group of fanboys (real life fanboys, this isn’t more plot) are trying to band together a boycott of Weinstein / Dimension Films product until they release the real, original version of the film. I reckon that shouldn’t be that hard, as their output pretty much sucks as of late. In fact, staying away from Weinstein / Dimension for the most part might actually do you some good in the long run.

At any rate, this is what these guys have planned, and they seem to be very sincere and have thought all of this through, so, if you’re so inclined, check out one of their websites, and see what you can do to help.

At least they’re doing something, rather than sitting around complaining and I respect that.
