Home of the One-Week Screenplay

I have to admit, I’m a bit of an idiot. A little over a week ago, I got the idea in my head that I could actually write a screenplay in a week. See, I’d read this article over at Jeff Vandermeer’s blog entitled “How to Write a Novel in Two Months”, and I figured, taking into account the “exchange rate” between a novel and a screenplay, it was more than easily doable in seven days (and then some) …

Besides, it had been some time since I’d written anything substantial and going over my old screenplay that I’ve been using for the storyboarding tutorials on this site, I figured it was time I did something better. But, most importantly, I could try out a demo of Montage, which is a (fairly) new Mac screenwriting program from Mariner Software which promises to be a good replacement for Final Draft, which has been in decline the last couple of years, especially on the Mac platform.

Well, the week is up and I have 10.3 pages so far, but I’m not calling it a failure yet; I had computer problems on Thursday night, from which I lost a few hours of work from the previous day, and, in the days leading up to that, I had to put together some last minute touch-ups on some other projects … excuses, excuses I know.

Anyway, I still contend it is possible. I’m not talking “Atonement” here, or even “Juno”, just a bare-bones horror film with some good action and gore. How hard can it be, right?

So, let’s say I’ve spent a day on it so far. Six more days? Is it possible? Will it be complete and utter crap? Is Montage the replacement for Final Draft I’ve been waiting for? Or will I suddenly become an “American Idol” fan and devote my week to preparing myself for Thursday night’s results show?

I guess stay tuned and find out.
