So, apparently tomorrow night, the U.S. is going to shoot down a rogue, dead satellite over Hawaii that’s expected to rain debris over Western-Northern Canada. First, isn’t all of this vaguely reminiscent of Wim Wenders’ “Until the End of the World”? I think so …
Secondly, I was just sitting here, reading a very good article on Wired News about the whole thing and made the terrible mistake of scrolling down to the comments section. What has happened to the Internet? You would think that the U.S. and Canada have been at war for years, or we were neighboring forces in the Middle East. I just don’t get where the animosity comes from.
I dunno, maybe it’s the Digg Syndrome, or the AICN Talkback syndrome. It seems like comment areas on blogs and website today are used for two primary reasons: vitriol and spam. I mean, healthy discussion is a great thing, but if you’re reading through and you can plainly see that no one is even reading what the other person is saying until it gets personal (be it Americans against Canadians or Windows users against Mac users or some equally serious religious division). It’s like a personal affront is exactly what these people are looking for, what they are provoking and what they thrive upon.
Life’s waaaaaay too short.
Anyway, I’m sure people greater than me have thought this whole missile-shooting-down-satellite thing through and we won’t all be killed by some poisonous radiation spreading across the globe in a matter of weeks. But even if the end of the world does come, I know that people will still be complaining and fighting and making things generally difficult for their fellow man for really no reason at all.
As Bob Dylan sang, You’re an idiot, babe. It’s a wonder you still know how to breathe.
