(via MacMerc) Mac fanboys were secretly quaking in their boots a few weeks ago when it was announced that TV funnyman Jerry Seinfeld was tapped to take part in a $300 million ad campaign on behalf of Micro$oft as a response to Apple’s “Get a Mac” ads that have been chipping away at the software manufacturer and its Vista woes for well over a year now.
If this (see video below) is any indication of what MS has in mind, I don’t think Steve Jobs has a whole hell of a lot to worry about. Frankly, the subliminal placement of a Mac in Jerry’s apartment in virtually every episode of his classic sitcom has more of a lasting impact than this ill-conceived comedy number.
I’m actually a bit confused by the ad. I’m sure someone at some marketing firm thought it would be a clever idea never to mention “the product” (maybe 10 years ago, yes), but the ad, frankly comes off, sadly, like Bill Gates paid Seinfeld a whole crapload of money just so he could be seen hanging around with him to prove that he’s more cool that Steve Jobs.
Maybe a “killer” ad will follow. Who knows …
Updated 9/18/08: No soup for you! According to Valleywag, Microsoft plans to drop the ads, starting today, moving ahead, instead, to Phase II of their campaign, which will contain a PC user, looking very much like the John Hodgman PC character from Apple’s “Get a Mac” ads, complaining how he’s become a stereotype, along with shots and pieces of average PC users talking about how they love Vista.
Wow, that sounds great. I’m glad I switched already.
