The new Nine Inch Nails album, “Ghosts”, a 36 track instrumental collection, has been released exclusively online. Following the example of Radiohead with “In Rainbows”, the main difference here is that the NIN tracks sound amazing, rather than the really-very-low-quality tracks Radiohead released (as more or less a teaser as the album eventually went on-sale as a regular music CD).
The album is available in multiple formats (all downloadable, high-quality, DRM free, and licensed under Creative Commons for non-commercial use) ranging from free (the first nine tracks only) to a $300 “ultra deluxe limited edition package”. The $5 full album download seems like the most logical option if you are just a casual listener.
I’ve listened to the first few tracks and I can say, it’s unquestionably, brilliant, but I’ve always preferred Reznor’s instrumental tracks. Hey, the album art included with each track is pretty cool too.
The music’s available at Amazon’s site as well as the official site, but, note: the official site is experiencing some slowness night now, due to overwhelming demand. The band/Trent Reznor has apparently uploaded a torrent of the free tracks to Pirate Bay if you can’t get through on the main site.
