RED is the New Scarlet [updated]

(via SlashGear) A little ahead of the official announcement, news has leaked-out that the new direction of RED’s Scarlet camera, which — about a year ago — offered 3K digital resolution filmmaking at a slashed price ($3000), will a modular mix-and-match system where you can choose your components (and resulting price tag) from a nearly dizzying array of options, then go and shoot until you’re blue in the face. While this is better than the original spec, especially in respect to the lens-mount option, it looks like reality is now crashing in as far as the price is concerned, something I was pretty sure was going to happen eventually.

Scarlet’s “brain” is now priced at $2500 with a Mini-RED/B4/C-mount and will be available Summer/Fall 2009 (which means sometime in 2010 probably). The fixed-lens model will apparently still be available, price to be determined. Everything else is extra now, so, when you’re done placing your order you’re not going to be getting 3K for $3K, maybe something like $10K when all is said and done.

I’m sure more details will emerge after the official announcement later today.
