No, I don’t even want to say the words, “RED Scarlet has been canceled“, but, in a note on the RED user boards, Jim Jannard, president of the company, posted a cryptic note: “We have changed everything about Scarlet because the market has changed and we have discovered a lot of things in the process. We have a new vision.” The RED Scarlet page on the site has been replaced by the image to the left, “In the process of change.”

Speculation says the recent announcements about the Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D90 and their respective ability to shoot HD video has put the fear of God into RED. I don’t understand why (apart from the price point and interchangeable lens option); even with the specs slightly crippled as they were, I was more than happy to stand in line for the promise of 3K for $3K.

So what’s going to change? The lens option? The price? Are they still going to make the dream camera for independents, or, as other talk last week hinted at, are they looking to enter the DSLR market instead, with a still camera that just happens to shoot high quality video as well? I dunno. I have a gut feeling that the dream of the RED Scarlet is dead.
