The RED Scarlett Can’t Be Real — can it?

At NAB this year, RED announced a whole crap-load of new products which included the “Scarlett”. There is so much right about Scarlett, it must be wrong … it’s basically the same technology as REDOne, which I’ve been very excited about and have been promoting to anyone who will listen (without ever having even touched one), but captures at 1K less (3K for those as bad at math as me), and is a little streamlined as far as gadgets are concerned (I understand even the LCD is separate), which is no big deal. But the fact that this thing will apparently retail at $3000 has me punching myself because I must be dreaming.

3K for $3K? That must be wrong. But if it’s right, it’s the most exciting thing that’s happened in indie filmmaking in a long time. I mean, for under $5K I can shoot something, pull it right into Final Cut Studio 2, edit, export a D.I. and I have a feature film?!?!?! You’ve got to be kidding. Life’s not that good.

I guess the big downside is that Scarlett’s not available until “early 2009″, and if that release date is anything like REDOne’s release date, we’re looking at a little later than early 2009.

The brochure for all of RED’s new products (including the new 5K “Epic”) can be found here. Oh God, I hope it’s real …

    Only a little thing:
This will be a fixed lens. You’ll have the DOF of a 2/3″ CMOS, but not a full 35mm one with cinema lens. You’ll have to put a adapter, and then crop your quality to HD only, and say hi to achromat aberration…
But if you like the video look and use to shoot your film with a DVX or HVX, or if you are a videoclip lover, then you’ll have the erection of your life.

Thanks for the info, yes, fixed lens is a bit of a drag, and hardly worth the effort. I knew it was too good to be true. Another dream shattered. Well, maybe Scarlett 2 …
