Toronto Landmarks Gutted by Fire

A six alarm fire destroyed half a block of Queen Street this morning at Queen and Portland. Among the casualties was the historic Duke’s Cycle and Suspect Video’s first, main store, among other buildings which had recently been declared a heritage conservation district …

According to CityTV, it took 150 firefighters in 30 trucks more than 8 hours to contain the blaze. The weather (it was -16ยบ C when I woke up this morning) was a contributing factor apparently, as the water intended to extinguish the fire just sort of turned into this glaze around the edges.

Thankfully there were no fatalities.

I spent a huge chunk of my life living and working in this neighborhood after film school and it’s sad to see some of its key highlights now gone, presumably, forever. I’ll miss Suspect Video especially, even though it’s been many years since I’ve been in (I think I was actually buying videos at the time). I’m sure it can be rebuilt, but it will never have the same charm that so much epitomizes what I like about Toronto.
